FAQ
Q: What is the rake?
A: Our rake is 10% of every pot up to a maximum of $10 on 1-2 games. For
higher games we rake at 5% up to a maximum of $20.
Q: How does the Bad Beat Jackpot work?
A: The Bad Beat Jackpot (BBJ) is won if you are holding Aces full
of Jacks or better and your hand gets beaten. You must
be using both cards from your hand in order to qualify for the
BBJ. Please note that in all Pineapple games quad deuces
is the minimum losing hand and in all Omaha games quad eights
is the minimum losing hand.
Q: How much is the Bad Beat Jackpot worth?
A: It all depends on the day and how long it has been since the
previous BBJ was won. Our BBJ routinely goes over $20,000
however!
Q: Do you give Royal Flush, Straight Flush and quads (four of
a kind) bonuses.
A: Yes. If you make quads, Plaza 138 gives a $50 bonus. The
bonus is $200 for a Straight Flush, and $500 for a Royal Flush! Remember,
that you must be using both cards in your hand
Q: Your ads say “free food and drink” yet I have to
pay for chips and chocolate bars, why?
A: All meals and beverages (including alcoholic beverages) are
free at the Plaza. The only foods you have to pay for are
snacks which are kept on hand instead of placing them in a vending
machine.
Q: How secure is Plaza 138?
A: Very secure. We have full time security on staff at all
times. Additionally, we have an intricate system of cameras
watching all tables and offices, as well as the surrounding areas.
Q: Isn’t Kahnawake far?
A: Not true. In fact Plaza 138 Poker is likely closer to where
you live than the Montreal Casino. We are located 15 minutes
from downtown Montreal and only five minutes from LaSalle and
Chateauguay.
Q: What is the minimum number of players to start a cash table?
A: We are always willing to start a cash table rake free when three
players wish to play. At four players we charge half rake
and go to full rake at five players. When a table is breaking
down, there is no rake reduction.
Q: Do I have to tip dealers and hostesses?
A: Tipping dealers is not mandatory; however our dealers make the
majority of their salary through your generosity, as do our hostesses,
therefore we kindly ask that you tip your dealers.
Q: How much of my tournament entry fee goes towards the “House”?
A: This depends on the tournament, however Plaza 138 guarantees
that no tournament will ever have an entry fee of over 20% of
the initial buy in: the greater the value of original buy-in
the lower the fee.
Q: Why is smoking permitted at Plaza 138 Poker when the Government
of Quebec passed a no smoking law in 2006?
A: The Mohawk Council of Kahnawá:ke has opted not
to adopt the Quebec-wide smoking ban, therefore smoking is still
permitted in business establishments located in Kahnawake. However,
if the smoke bothers you, we will soon have available a brand new
higher stakes non-smoking room which will be fully operational
in April, 2008.
Q: What is the biggest game you offer?
A: The majority of Plaza 138 customers currently play 1-2 No Limit
Hold’em. However, quite often we also feature a
2-5 game. With the opening of our new higher stakes room,
Plaza will also begin spreading 5-5 and 5-10 games.
Q: What if I want to play a game other than Hold’em?
A: If you want to get a table open featuring a game other than
Hold’em, just let management know. We are always
willing to get an Omaha, Pineapple, Stud or Dealers Choice game
going provided there is enough interest.
Q: What is the Kahnawake Gaming Commission?
A: The Commission is empowered to regulate and control gaming
and gaming related activities conducted within and from the Mohawk
Territory of Kahnawake in accordance with the highest principles
of honesty and integrity.
Q: Do I have to pay taxes on my gambling winnings?
A: That depends on where you live and what you do for a living. Gambling
winnings are not taxable if you live in Canada provided this is
not your primary source of income. If you are visiting from the
United States, your winnings are subject to taxation, but YOU are
responsible for declaring them.
Q: Why is Plaza 138 Poker not licensed by the Government of Quebec?
A: Section 35 of Canadian constitution recognizes the inherent
right of Aboriginal self government. As such, the Mohawks of
Kahnawake chose to get their license from the Kahnawake Gaming
Commission, which handles billions of dollars including the majority
of all on-line gaming across the world.
Q: Do I have to pay for parking?
A: No. Parking is free in our spacious outdoor parking lot which
is located directly outside our main entrance.
Q: What is the typical age group of people who play poker at the
Plaza?
A: Plaza 138 Poker has adults of all ages playing in our games. We
have an age range from 18 to 80 as regulars.
Q; I’m a woman, will I seem out of place playing poker at
Plaza 138?
A: Absolutely not. While more men play poker than women,
a good 15-20% of our clientele are women, and they are just as
good as our male players, so be careful!
Q: Can I book a private table or the entire room for an event?
A: Of course! Just give us a call and ask to speak to one of the
managers to find out about pricing and availability. Our new
high stakes room will be particularly good for your special events.
Q: Can you help us organize a charity event? Does it have to be
at Plaza 138?
A: Absolutely, Plaza 138 Poker is happy to host your charity poker
event. We’ll even organize and market the event. Our
staff has a wide range of experience in organizing and coordinating
such events. Just give us a call and ask to speak to management,
and we will set up a meeting to discuss your requirements. The
management of Plaza 138 Poker has directed numerous charity poker
events across the Island of Montreal. We also do consulting on
smaller tournaments to make them successful offering you a tiered
approach for tighter budgets.
Q: Do you use good quality cards or cheap paper cards like I use,
or NO cards like the Montreal Casino?
A: Plaza 138 Poker uses only the highest quality 100% plastic Copag® playing
cards in all our cash games and tournaments. If you want to play
the best, use the best!
Q: Why do I pay a “dealer add-on” in your tournaments? What
is that exactly?
A: The dealer add-on entitles you to a designated amount of extra
chips. It also provides a little something extra to your dealers
paid to them before the beginning of all our tournaments. This
is usually just a nominal amount and people are happy to pay it
considering the high quality of service they receive.
Q: How many positions do you pay out in your tournaments?
A: The formula is very simple. Look at the amount of tables
and add one. For example, if a tournament has four tables,
we will pay the top five; five tables pay top six, etc.
Q: Is it easy to get to and from Plaza 138 with public transportation?
A: There is an hourly bus to Kahnawake from Angrignon Metro Station
which takes you directly to the Plaza, however we recommend coming
by car for the sake of convenience.
Q: Are taxis available to give me a ride home?
A: Yes, just ask one of our Plaza cashiers to call you a cab and
we would be glad to do so.
Q: Do you broadcast Pay-Per-View sporting events?
A: Yes we do. Plaza 138 Poker shows all major sports events
including boxing, UFC, WWE, and a variety of other Pay-Per-View
events.
Q: What languages are spoken at the tables at the Plaza?
A: While our customers have a vastly diverse background, the language
at the tables must be limited to English or French. This prevents
anyone from colluding or divulging any information that could
unfairly affect the game.
Q: Can I ban myself from Plaza 138 Poker?
A: If you feel you have a gambling problem and want to impose self
ban, simply say so to a member of Plaza management and we will
be happy to comply.
Q: Aren’t electronic poker machines faster than live dealers?
A: No. Plaza 138 Poker has the fastest dealers in the greater
Montreal area. We average between 30-35 hands per hour which
is comparable to the amount of hands you will play on an electronic
table. In fact, oftentimes electronic casino poker machines
have lag times that exceed one minute, and they don’t have
much of a personality either.
Q: Do you have satellites to the World Series of Poker or World
Poker Tour?
A: Unfortunately, we do not offer any satellites to WSOP or WPT
events at this time, but it is something we are considering moving
forward.
Q: Do you accept US dollars?
A: Yes we do. We always accept American dollars based on
the current exchange rate.
Q: How many tables are there at Plaza 138?
A: The main room at Plaza has six tables, while the high
stakes room features two more tables for a total of eight. We
also have backup tables which are taken out for larger tournament
nights.
Q: Does Plaza 138 Poker give credit?
A: Unfortunately Plaza 138 does not offer credit. This is actually
a direct contravention of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission regulations.
If any poker room in this territory provides credit to its players,
it is breaking the law as set out by the KGC.
Q: Is there an ATM machine available?
A: Yes, we have an ATM machine located in our main room.
Q: Why do I have to fill out a membership application?
A: One of the regulations of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission is
that all poker rooms must keep a record of all their customers
for security and to prevent potential criminal activity, such
as money laundering. In addition, Plaza 138 Poker is always offering
great promotions to its most loyal customers. Keeping player
records allows us to offer future rewards to them. Remember,
your personal information is secure with us and Plaza 138 Poker
will never give it out to anyone.
